MURFREESBORO, TN – It was a case of price-tag swapping that landed one subject behind bars. The case, that occurred at the Walmart store on Old Fort Parkway, involved a 30-year-old suspect who lives in Unionville, TN. The subject allegedly entered the store and found the merchandise he was looking for, and according to a police report, swapped out the sticker that had the price on it for a lower priced item.

Price-tag swapping occurs at thousands of stores across the country daily and is a crime that is considered as theft. When a culprit commits such a crime, he or she simply swaps out the higher priced price tag, for a lower priced price tag on an item of lesser value. Retail outlets loose hundreds of millions of dollars annually to this crime, as it is tough for a cashier to catch the culprit because the cashier does not have prices memorized for every item in the store.

In this case that unfolded in Murfreesboro, Walmart Loss Prevention Workers noticed his deep savings attempt and quickly moved in after he paid a lower price for the vehicle floormats that he hand selected. When Murfreesboro officers arrived, they located the suspect in the loss prevention office where he had been detained for “shoplifting.” An arrest report filed by the MPD shows that the suspect was quite familiar with the booking process, and had an active warrant for his arrest. The report also suggested the suspect was familiar with the warrant’s process for prosecution in theft cases.

Evidently, the suspect was previously arrested in Marshall County in 2022 and in Bedford County in 2018. Currently, he remains behind bars in Rutherford County.
