(MURFREESBORO) Interstate 840 was shut-down on Sunday afternoon (3/19/2023) after a police pursuit started in Williamson County and ended in Rutherford County.  

The pursuit started in Williamson County and made its way to I-840 in Rutherford County about 15-minutes before 5:00 on Sunday evening. The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the pursuit when Williamson County Deputies called for assistance. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist as the chase neared exit 57 at Sulphur Springs Road. One mile later at mile marker 58 on I-840, the chase ended when spike strips were deployed by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Rutherford County officials, a medical helicopter was called in for what was labeled a “Medical Emergency” on I-840. The helicopter was later called off after authorities discovered the subject being chased by law enforcement had allegedly shot himself.  The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed, “A wanted suspect was removed from the vehicle and transported to a hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted wound.” The man who was being chased was wanted on multiple warrants.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that I-840 was quickly shutdown shortly after 5PM stating, “A medical emergency closed Interstate 840 near the Sulphur Springs exit east of Murfreesboro.” Not too long after the pursuit ended, a semi-truck nearing the stalled traffic on the interstate crashed into several vehicles. The accident resulted in multiple injuries being reported, all of which were later said to be minor.

More Accidents in Middle TN - Although the first day of spring is today, March 20th, the frigid wintry weekend impacted several crashes throughout the mid-state:  Two teens were killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Brentwood, both teens were Brentwood residents. A deadly I-40 crash near the Goose Creek bypass occurred when a car slammed into the rear of a stopped car in the pre-dawn hours on Sunday, one person was in critical condition. Two more deaths were reported on I-65 South in Robertson County; and another death in a two-vehicle crash on I-40 in Mt. Juliet.
