New Bills in Education Could Further Help with School Safety and Also School Funding in Rutherford County

Rutherford County, TN - A lot of changes are being proposed for schools throughout the state.  Bills dealing with the 3rd Grade Retention rate, School Readiness, and Fast Growth in School Districts will be heard before the General Assembly – all of which could benefit Rutherford County Schools. JC Bowman, Executive Director of the Professional Educators of Tennessee, highlighted one bill that focuses on school safety… Senate Bill 1064 will be heard by the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 and is sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley. The accompanying bill, House Bill 0889 is sponsored by Representative Todd Warner.

Bowman further stated… Senate Bill 1155, sponsored by Senator John Stevens, will also be heard by the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday. The accompanying house version is House Bill 0892 and it’s being pushed forward by Representative Jay Reedy. Read more about the bills by scrolling down.

HB 0889: Teachers, Principals and School Personnel - As introduced, requires a school official or teacher who observes or otherwise has knowledge of an assault and battery or vandalism endangering life, health, or safety committed by a student on school property to report the action immediately to the school principal and the director of schools, instead of reporting only to the school principal. - Amends TCA Title 49. This is a bill by Representative Todd Warner.

SB 1064: Teachers, Principals and School Personnel - As introduced, requires a school official or teacher who observes or otherwise has knowledge of an assault and battery or vandalism endangering life, health, or safety committed by a student on school property to report the action immediately to the school principal and the director of schools, instead of reporting only to the school principal. - Amends TCA Title 49. This is a bill by Senator Joey Hensley.

HB 0892: Teachers, Principals and School Personnel - As introduced, adds the director of schools as a person to whom a principal must report the principal's direct knowledge of an offense of assault and battery or vandalism committed by a student on school property endangering the life, health, or safety of others; expands the educator's bill of rights to include the educator's right to report an offense of assault and battery or vandalism committed by a student on school property and the educator's right to receive benefits if the educator is a teacher who is absent from their assigned duties due to injuries caused by a criminal act committed against the teacher in the course of the teacher's employment activities. - Amends TCA Title 49. This is a bill by Representative Jay Reedy.
