(MURFREESBORO) Here's an update on the Birchwood Apartments, 1535 Lascassas Pike, that occured around 12:30PM Friday (3/3/2023) afternoon. A Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue spokesperson told WGNS that a woman was trapped inside an upstairs unit and rescued by a neighbor.
Reports indicate that she was attempting to crawl out of the burning apartment. The woman had a previous leg injury, and a Murfreesboro police officer had to carry the woman out of a smoke-filled breezeway.
She was medically evaluated by paramedics from the Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services and taken to the ER at Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital.
NewsRadio WGNS was on-the-scene and firefighters used ladders to rescue four other tenants and pets from apartments in building C.
Heavy smoke and flames were visible as first units pulled into the apartment complex. Firefighters attacked the fire aggressively and contained it to a downstairs apartment. The apartment sustained fire, smoke, heat, and water damage. An upstairs unit received smoke and heat damage.
Damage in two apartments was so extensive that tenants were forced to move. Volunteers with the Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross are helping the fire victims with their needs.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and Fire Marshal Carl Peas was on-the-scene shortly after the call came in.
WGNS says THANK YOU tp fire personnel with Engine 3, Engine 7, Ladder 1, Ladder 4, Ladder 6, Ladder 8, Rescue 1, Rescue 4, Battalion Chief 1 and 2, Safety 1 and 2 assisted with the fire. In addition, several administrative staff members also responded to the fire. Thank you also to personnel with Murfreesboro Police Department, Ruterford County Emergency Medical Services, and the Heart of Tennessee' Red Cross for helping with this Friday afternoon apartment blaze.
