LOOKING BACK - When the train depot opened in the late 1800’s, Smyrna had a population of less than 5-hundred residents. By 1950, the population grew to a little over 1,500 residents. Census records show the real growth spike occurred in the 1980’s when Nissan announced plans to build an assembly plant in Smyrna. Following the opening of the plant, the city recorded skyrocketing growth of more than 7,500 new residents, equaling a population count of 16,387 by 1990. The town continued to thrive, growing by an additional 38-thousand residents between 1990 and 2021. Today, over 55-thousand people call Smyrna home.
