A murder that occurred 12-years ago may be in the cold case files, but the files continue heat up by Murfreesboro Detectives and surviving family members today. Investigators continue to focus on the shooting at 1401 Eagle Street, that took place on May 22nd of 2010.
Looking back to the crime, Nathan Morgan, Jr. was visiting friends on Eagle Street in Murfreesboro when shots rang out shortly after midnight. Police believe one or more persons fired shots from an outside area of a neighboring home. The shots came from what was believed to be an assault rifle. Lewis Sweeney of Nashville and Byrus Hughes of Murfreesboro were both struck by bullets and were transported to the hospital, where they were treated and released. Shots then hit Murfreesboro resident Nathan Morgan, Jr. The 24-year-old was transported to the what was then called Middle Tennessee Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Detective James Abbott with the MPD stated… Abbott believes the individual who received phone calls from the suspect or someone tied to the shooting hold pertinent information that could help solve this murder.
It is thought that the gunman armed himself with an assault rifle, positioned himself in the shadows of a nearby home - and opened fire. Detective Abbott said this case is indeed solvable, which gives hope for closure to the family of Morgan… It has been speculated that Morgan was not the intended target in the murder, which makes the death even tougher for surviving family.
Former District Attorney General Bill Whitesel, who retired in 2014, was the DA when the murder occurred in 2010. Whitesell said the public plays a vital role in investigations like this… This year, Morgan would have turned 36 on May 7, 2022.
Surviving family of Morgan, including the 24-year-olds daughter who misses her father daily, remain hopeful that the case can end with an arrest and conviction.
