Growth continues throughout Rutherford County and the county schools are not immune to the rise in population. In discussing the growth, county school’s spokesperson James Evans reflected on a statement made by one of the candidates who applied to be the next director of schools… 18-Years ago in 2004, the Rutherford County Schools had fewer than 30,000 students…

There is no end in site to the growth.  Many families make the move to Rutherford County because of the growing business community, which includes everything from factories to corporate offices. To keep up with the growth, the county is looking at adding on to 5-different high schools. Evans said… The county schools will continue to search for land suitable for a new school in the Blackman area, but to date – nothing has been purchased.

Adding on to Current High Schools: At the high school level, additions to (1) Riverdale, (2) Smyrna, (3) LaVergne, (4) Blackman and (5) Oakland High Schools are proposed and expected to move forward in the near future. Each addition will cost between $26-million and $29-million. The grand total rings in at a little more than $137-million.

Additions at Other Local Schools: The county schools are also planning for additions at Stewarts Creek Middle, Blackman Elementary, and Stewarts Creek Elementary Schools for the the 2022-2023 school year. Those additions are expected to cost a little under $40-million, according to information released earlier this year.
