SATURDAY in MURFREESBORO: Collections Manager for the Tennessee Division of Archaeology to present “Guardians of Antiquity: The Care and Preservation of Archaeological Collections”

Macie Orrand, the new Collections Manager for the Tennessee Division of Archaeology

The Rutherford County Archaeological Society (RCAS) invites the public to attend a free special presentation at their meeting this Saturday, March 26, 1:00pm at the Oaklands Mansion event room, 900 N. Maney Avenue, Murfreesboro, TN.  

Macie Orrand, the new Collections Manager for the Tennessee Division of Archaeology, will present “Guardians of Antiquity: The Care and Preservation of Archaeological Collections.”

Macie is responsible for curating and caring for artifacts recovered from our state owned lands. Her presentation will highlight the importance of collections care and the responsibility and roles of collection managers and archaeologists to ensure that archaeological collections are available for generations to come. 

She will discuss all that goes into the care of collections and her development of the TN Collections Management Community of Practice (COP).  Macie will also provide insight into the knowledge she's gained over the past months working with other curators from institutions and agencies all over the southeast, and what she envisions for the future of archaeological collections care and preservation.

Laura Bartel, Executive Director of the Rutherford County Archaeological Society, stated, “We are fortunate to have Macie as our guest speaker providing instruction on the proper care of artifacts as well as the necessary information and documentation that should accompany collections. This presentation will also provide the general public with valuable information they may use in the care of their own art, antiques, and collections.”

The Rutherford County Archaeological Society(RCAS) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit educational service organization. Promoting public archaeology, we bring together folks from all walks of life and professional archaeologists. We serve to educate and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of archaeology, to demonstrate the importance of research, and to promote the stewardship, preservation, and protection of our cultural resources. About Macie Orrand

A native of Murfreesboro, Macie completed her B.S. in Anthropology from Middle Tennessee State University in 2017 and continued her education at Georgia State University, where in 2020 she received her M.A. in Anthropology along with a Museum Anthropology certification. Macie is passionate about collections and is excited about establishing a state-of-the-art collections program for the Division of Archaeology. In addition, Macie also serves as an adjunct faculty member at MTSU and enjoys sharing her love of archaeology with students.  Macie is the mother of Alaina and Valerian, who are the light of her life.
