WGNS has another update to a scam troubling local residents. In this case, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office advises potential victims to “Beware of a jury duty scam.”

A Smyrna woman was frightened when she received a phone call Wednesday stating, “She must pay $900 for missing jury duty or spend 14 days in jail.”

Officials with the Sheriff's Office say that the caller told the woman his name was Sgt. Taylor and that he was with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

Fortunately, she talked to a friend who called the local sheriff’s office to learn the phone call was someone trying to earn some easy money through a scam.

It is important to note, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT have a Sgt. Taylor. Most importantly, the sheriff’s office DOES NOT call residents to demand money or to threaten to to take anyone to jail for missing jury duty.

Another tell-tale sign that the person calling you is a scammer is the request for you to buy gift cards. Scammers routinely ask for would-be victims to buy a variety of gift cards with the request that you give them (the scammer) the card numbers.

The sheriff's office asks residents to not fall for the scam and instead – hang up the phone. They also encourage you to let your friends and family know that they too should HANG UP when they receive these calls.
