After spending over 2 months in the hospital due to COVID-19 complications, Joe Gammon of Middle Tennessee was discharged from Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown rehab facility last Friday afternoon.

It was an exciting day for Gammon and his family and he was escorted down the hallways by his wife and Ascension Saint Thomas associates, cheering him on as he left the building.

“I get to be one of the lucky ones,” Joe stated. “Not many people, that have dealt with COVID, have gotten the chance to do this. I am so excited to go home to my family.”

After taking care of his family who contracted COVID in early July, Joe was sent to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West where he fought for his life on an ECMO machine. Once Joe gained enough strength, he was then transferred to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown where he received inpatient rehab care.

Joe had the opportunity to get the vaccine early on, but decided against it. Now he plans to take the shot as soon as possible and encourages others to discuss the vaccine with their health care providers.

Joe is now back with his family and looking forward to making up for lost time.
