Rutherford County COVID UPDATE

Rutherford County has recorded 49,187 total cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Of that number, there have been 463-deaths. Currently, there are 2,894 “ACTIVE” COVID cases in Rutherford County and 45,830 inactive or recovered cases.

Reports indicate there have been over 102-thousand COVID tests conducted in Rutherford County. 

Across the Volunteer State, there have been almost one-million positive COVID cases (997,479 as of 8/24/2021). Statewide, there have been 8.9-million COVID tests performed since the start of the pandemic. There have also been 13,204 COVID related deaths in Tennessee. 

Rutherford County Schools

In the Rutherford County Schools, there are 50-employees listed as being COVID Positive. There are also 140 county school employees who are quarantined.

The Rutherford County Schools student population is also suffering from the impact of the Coronavirus. There have been 500 positive COVID-19 cases confirmed in the county schools and 1,607 students remain out of school and in quarantine - out of the 48,754 student population.

Stewarts Creek High School has 38-COVID Positive student cases and 56-students on quarantine, ranking the school as having the highest number of COVID Positive cases in the county. La Vergne High School has the second highest number of student cases that are positive for COVID-19. This week, there have been 35-COVID Positive student cases at LHS with 90-students on quarantine. Smyrna High School comes in third with 32-students testing positive for COVID and 66 on quarantine.

The Pfizer Vaccine Update

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued full authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for individuals age 16 and up. The vaccine remains under emergency use authorization (EUA) for those age 12-15 years and for the administration of the third dose option for individuals who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. 

The full licensed approval from the FDA is given after more than 9 months of data review and continued case study.  The Pfizer vaccine has been available in Tennessee since December 2020 with approximately 3.4 million Pfizer doses administered to date.     

The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) wants to remind Tennesseans the COVID-19 vaccines are our best defense in preventing the continued spread of the virus.  Vaccination rates across the state have increased over the last month as the state experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases due to the highly contagious Delta variant.  In particular, younger Tennesseans are choosing to receive the vaccine with the highest rate of increases in the 12-15 age group and the 16-20 age group.

Additional guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is expected later this week, and the department encourages providers to review that guidance once released.  TDH will adhere to ACIP guidance regarding the administration of the vaccine. In addition, we are taking the necessary steps at our county health departments in anticipation of continued demand.
