La Vergne came from behind to defeat region foe Stewarts Creek 32-27 Friday night.
Wolverines running back Ray Banner eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark in five games this season with nearly 250-yards in the game and he scored four touchdowns. The last two coming in the final 5:30 of the game.
Stewarts Creek jumped out first on a 51-yard pass play from quarterback Alex Krenk to Tayden Mounivong on the opening drive. But Banner answered with a 74-yard run about 1:30 later. The ensuing kickoff by the Red Hawks was run back 74-yards to put them up 14-7.
La Vergne tied the game at 14 on the only second quarter score. That was your halftime score.
The Wolverines scored on a Lavandrea Webb to Greg Bush 32-yard pass to take a 20-14 lead to start the second half.
That lead was erased on an 11-yard run by Gabe Walker for Stewarts Creek, who led 21-20 after three quarters.
There were a lot of fourth quarter heroics on both sides. Krenk, who was 11-of-17 passing for 134 yards and a passing touchdown also got it done on the ground with this rushing TD:
He also had 95-yards on six-carries.
La Vergne and Banner would score the last 12-points of the game. This one got them within one:
A failed two point conversion left the Wolverines trailing by one until Banner's fourth TD of the night with 44-seconds to go:
The game wasn't over as Krenk led his team down field but as time expired, a pass into the endzone was intercepted by La Vergne's Bush, which sealed the win.
La Vergne goes into a bye week next Friday while Stewarts Creek hosts Station Camp in non-league play.
