SMYRNA, Tenn. (WGNS)- Drivers traveling Interstate 24 through Rutherford County should prepare for several weekends of ramp closures and traffic disruptions as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) resumes concrete repair work delayed by recent weather.
TDOT announced an updated construction schedule beginning Thursday, Oct. 15, with work continuing over three weekends through the end of October. The repairs will primarily affect the I-24 corridor near Sam Ridley Parkway, Almaville Road and Waldron Road in Smyrna and northern Rutherford County.
According to TDOT, ramp closures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Thursday and continue until 5 a.m. Friday. A second closure period will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and continue through 5 a.m. Sunday.
Weekend of Oct. 16-18
Motorists can expect the following closures and traffic changes:
-
Exit 66A – West Sam Ridley Parkway: Full closure of the eastbound exit ramp.
-
Exit 66B – East Sam Ridley Parkway: Full closure of the eastbound exit ramp.
-
Exit 70 – Almaville Road: Lane shift on the eastbound exit ramp.
-
Exit 66 – Sam Ridley Parkway: Lane shift on the westbound exit ramp.
-
Exit 64 – Waldron Road: Partial closure of the westbound exit ramp.
Both eastbound exits at Sam Ridley Parkway will be completely closed during the scheduled closure periods, requiring drivers traveling toward Smyrna from Nashville to use alternative routes.
Weekends of Oct. 23 and Oct. 30
Additional construction is planned for the final two weekends of October.
Crews will conduct joint replacement operations along Interstate 24 between Exit 66 at Sam Ridley Parkway and Exit 70 at Almaville Road.
The work will require intermittent nighttime lane closures in both directions, potentially affecting motorists traveling between Smyrna and Murfreesboro.
Part of Larger I-24 Improvement Project
The concrete repairs are part of TDOT's ongoing Interstate 24 resurfacing project extending from the Davidson County line, near mile marker 63, to Baker Road, near mile marker 71.
The project is included in the department's three-year pavement improvement plan and is intended to address roadway conditions along the heavily traveled corridor.
TDOT says all construction remains weather-dependent, meaning additional schedule changes are possible.
Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time, reduce speeds and remain alert for changing traffic patterns. Advance warning signs will be placed near affected ramps and construction areas.
Drivers can monitor current interstate conditions and construction updates through the TDOT SmartWay traffic map at smartway.tn.gov or by calling 511 for travel information.
