TENNESSEE (WGNS News) - The Tennessee Appellate Court Clerk’s Office has confirmed that appellate court case data from Tennessee was among information involved in a cybersecurity incident reported by West Publishing Corporation.

According to the Clerk’s Office, West discovered unauthorized activity on June 30, 2026. The company subsequently determined that a third party had gained unauthorized access to backup data during a period between March 1 and March 16. Tennessee officials were notified by West about the incident on July 27.

West Publishing Corporation reported that some of the court records involved could contain sensitive personal information. According to West, “a subset of court records was affected, some of which could potentially contain individuals’ names and possibly one or more of the following: Social Security number, driver’s license number, medical information, date of birth, and health insurance information.”

West said it immediately took steps to contain the unauthorized activity and secure its environment after discovering the incident. The company also launched an investigation that included third-party experts and law enforcement.

Following notification of the incident, the Tennessee judiciary activated its Cyber Incident Response Plan, which includes closely following state and federal reporting requirements. Despite the unauthorized access to the data, the Tennessee Appellate Court Clerk’s Office reported that the incident did not affect the integrity or functionality of its case management system, which remains operational.

West’s C-Track notification indicates that Tennessee was not alone. Data associated with court systems in several other states was also affected, including appellate or court systems in Alabama, Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Ohio and Wyoming, among others. The company stated that the incident was not caused by the affected courts’ networks, systems or data security.

West reported that it has no evidence to date that the incident resulted in fraud or misuse of the affected information. C-Track is also offering affected individuals complimentary access to Experian IdentityWorks for 12 months, which includes credit monitoring and identity restoration services.
