NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WGNS) - State officials are reshaping how Tennessee handles major disasters, and the changes will directly impact coordination right here in Rutherford County.

Governor Bill Lee announced Wednesday that the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency is now a standalone, cabinet-level department called the Department of the Tennessee Emergency Management Authority. State leaders say elevating the agency improves coordination across all levels of government before, during, and after a crisis.

Governor Lee praised the team's dedication and stated that the transition strengthens the state's ability to prepare and respond quickly when emergencies arise.

While the organizational structure and name are changing, state officials emphasize that the core mission remains the exact same. The agency will continue its daily work coordinating preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for natural and man-made hazards.

Commissioner Patrick C. Sheehan will continue to lead the department. Sheehan stated that the new structure better reflects the critical role of emergency management and allows the state to support local officials and emergency managers more effectively.

For residents in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and La Vergne, local emergency officials will continue to partner closely with the state authority to secure resources, training, and disaster relief funds when Rutherford County faces severe weather or other major incidents.
