MURFREESBORO, TN — On Monday morning, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue crews responded to a vehicle fire outside the Thorntons gas station and convenience store on Medical Center Parkway, near The Avenue shopping center. Thanks to a swift response from Ladder 11, Rescue 11, and Ladder 4 (C Shift), the fire was contained before it could spread to nearby vehicles or buildings. No injuries were reported. Fire officials emphasized the increased risk of vehicle fires during the hot summer months. High temperatures can stress a vehicle’s fuel system and electrical components, increasing the likelihood of fuel leaks, short circuits, and other hazards.

Why Summer Heat Raises Fire Risk:

  • Fuel system stress: Heat can cause expansion and potential rupture of fuel lines.

  • Wiring hazards: Electrical systems are more vulnerable to shorts in extreme temperatures.

  • Greenhouse effect: Sunlight trapped in the cabin can significantly raise interior temps, creating fire-prone conditions.

Preventative Tips for Drivers:

  • Schedule regular vehicle inspections

  • Avoid overloading your car’s electrical system

  • Maintain and replace car batteries as needed

  • Repair damaged or frayed wiring immediately

  • Use only high-quality replacement parts

  • Secure all wiring and cabling under the hood

Firefighters encourage residents to stay proactive about vehicle maintenance to reduce the risk of summer-related fires and stay safe on the road. See the "After" photo as smoke billows from the extinguished car fire below. Photos from MFRD.
