Hundreds Brave Rain for 10th Annual Hometown Heroes Walk for Children

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) – Despite rainy weather, over 250 passionate community members gathered for the 10th Annual Hometown Heroes Walk for Children on Friday, April 25, to show unwavering support for child abuse victims. The event, organized by the Child Advocacy Center, highlighted the importance of child abuse prevention and celebrated local heroes who dedicate their lives to protecting children.

The walk began at Murfreesboro Civic Plaza with opening remarks from Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr, who shared insights about the critical work of the Child Protective Investigative Team. After an invocation by Mytecia Miles from First Baptist Church and a presentation of the colors by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, the event honored seven 2025 Hometown Heroes.

The 2025 Hometown Heroes Award Recipients:

Andrea Butler: Dedicated detective with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, specializing in child abuse investigations with empathy and trust.
Morgan Clemmons: Investigator with the Department of Children’s Services, providing compassionate services in challenging child protection cases.
Marcy Gossett: Smyrna Police Department detective, known for her commitment to justice in cases involving child abuse and sexual abuse.
Jill Howlett: Licensed clinical social worker offering critical advocacy and support to children and families during trauma.
Presley Hosford: Community Education Coordinator at the Child Advocacy Center, empowering over 1,000 adults annually with knowledge to protect children.
Tracy Sheppard: CAC Board Fundraising Chair and Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy, a leader committed to justice and community service.
Jennifer West: Murfreesboro Police Department detective and expert in digital forensics, advancing investigations and ensuring justice for victims.

Event Director Sharon De Boer commended the honorees: “These humble local heroes have always put the children first. Their work is driven by compassion and a steadfast commitment to making our community a safer place.”

The enthusiastic walkers followed the route from Civic Plaza to Oakland’s Pavilion, where the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office provided a delicious lunch. Walkers enjoyed bottled water courtesy of sponsors and explored information booths hosted by organizations such as Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), A Step Ahead, and Head Start.

Faithful sponsors, including Ascend Federal Credit Union, BlueCross BlueShield, and Wilson Bank and Trust, made the free event possible. Notably, the Golden Sneakers Award for the largest group participation went to the Head Start team, with 75 children joining the walk.
