NASHVILLE - Authorities are investigating a deadly school shooting Wednesday (1/22/2025) morning at Antioch High School. That's where we find Access Tennessee's Will Nunley, who has this report:The shooting happened during lunch, with the first gunfire reported at 11:09AM. Metro Nashville Police, at 3:15pm, reported the 16-year-old girl who was fatally wounded in the cafeteria is identified as Josselin Corea Escalante. The 17-year-old shooter who killed himself is identified as Solomon Henderson, who was an active student at the school.

A third male student was grazed by a bullet wound to their arm and is in stable condition at Vanderbilt Hospital. A fourth student is a male who was wearing glasses and suffered facial injuries from a fall. That student is at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

According to police, the school’s cafeteria is where the shooting occured by an individual who then turned the gun on himself.  The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are on-site assisting the MNPD.

Police released that the male shooter allegedly went into a nearby restroom where the weapon was  hidden, and then came back into the cafeteria with the gun. Police encourage anyone, "If you see or hear something, say something."

A mother on-the-scene shared the mood that many were feeling, "I can't imagine, there are parents whose two children won't be coming home tonight".

Antioch High School has about 2,000 students. MNPD has set up a reunification site for parents at Ascension Medical Group, located at 3754 Murfreesboro Pike. Authorities requests parents avoid coming to the school itself.

About a year ago, Metro installed the Omni-Alert security system. It uses AI software that is connected with the cameras and alerts officials when a gun is detected. However, in this situation--the gun was not uncovered until the incident was happening in the cafeteria.

There were two SRO's (School Resource Officers) at the school, but when they were informed of the unfolding incident, by the time the minutes passed for them to get to the cafeteria--the shooting had already occured. Another issue issue that has developed through the day is communications. There are over 40 languages spoken at Antioch High School.

METRO NASHVILLE POLICE RELEASE DETAILS: Homicide Unit detectives along with their law enforcement partners in the MNPD and federal/state agencies are examining very concerning on-line writings and social media posts connected to 17-year-old Solomon Henderson as they work to establish the motive behind Henderson’s gunfire this morning in Antioch High School’s cafeteria. Sixteen-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante was fatally wounded. A 17-year-old male student was grazed in the arm. He has been treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Henderson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The investigation to this point has not established a connection between Henderson and the two shooting victims. It may be that they were struck by his random gunfire in the cafeteria.

The two school resource officers assigned to Antioch High School were in another part of the building when the gunfire started. They rushed to the cafeteria and arrived just after Henderson killed himself.

“On behalf of this entire police department, I extend our deep condolences to Antioch High students, parents, and staff,” Chief John Drake said. “Our officers and counselors will work to be part of the healing process in the days and weeks ahead.”

As to questions concerning any prior police interaction with Henderson, the MNPD will not be at liberty to address those as Tennessee law protects juvenile information in most law enforcement matters.
