Rutherford County, TN - Fatal accidents in Rutherford County have increased over the years, outpacing the region's population growth. In 2010, the county had a population of approximately 263,700 residents and reported 20 fatalities on its roadways. By 2023, the population had grown to 370,200—a 40.3% increase—but the number of fatal accidents had risen by 48%, with 39 fatalities recorded last year (2023).
The trend in Rutherford County has fluctuated over the years. After a 70% rise in fatalities between 2010 and 2014, the county saw a decline in 2015, reporting 24 fatalities. However, numbers surged to 41 in 2016 and then dipped to 33 in 2017. The highest recorded year of fatalities in Rutherford County occurred in 2020, with 45 deaths. While Rutherford County grapples with these increases, the statewide numbers tell a more nuanced story. Fatalities across Tennessee have grown by 17% since 2010, from 980 to 1,271 in 2023, while the state population has only increased by about 12.3%.
New Strategies to Improve Road Safety - In response to these alarming trends, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and its safety partners have introduced a new Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) for 2025–2029. The plan takes a proactive approach toward achieving zero roadway deaths. It includes the state’s first Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Safety Assessment, focusing on protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users who are at greater risk due to their lack of protective barriers.
The SHSP emphasizes the Safe System Approach, which prioritizes human life and recognizes that human errors are inevitable. This approach calls for safer road designs, better visibility, reduced conflict points, and speed management to protect the most vulnerable road users. TDOT has reported progress in addressing roadway safety, but the rise in fatalities highlights the need for ongoing efforts.
Looking Ahead - With population growth expected to continue, the emphasis on safer roadways and proactive measures is more crucial than ever. WGNS will continue to track updates on road safety and provide quarterly information on efforts to reduce serious injuries and fatalities.
