Lingerie Larceny and More: Murfreesboro's Ongoing Bout with Serial Shoplifting

MURFREESBORO, TN — It seems shoplifting in Murfreesboro is the gift that keeps on giving—and we’re not talking about holiday shopping cheer. In what could be the plotline for a never-ending heist movie, Murfreesboro’s Victoria’s Secret, Best Buy, Ulta, and more have long struggled with thieves treating themselves to free merchandise at quite the scale. Lingerie looters and beauty bandits have left their mark over the years, swiping thousands in everything from lace to laptops.

In a particularly infamous case, five brazen ladies set what may have been a Murfreesboro record in 2018, pilfering close to $8,000 in undergarments just before Valentine's Day at Victoria's Secret, a store that was hit on a regular basis... That was MPD Capt. Clayton Williams. Then, in a déjà-vu moment that October, a new band of “enthusiastic” shoppers returned to Victoria’s Secret, making off with a cool $4,400 worth of items. Apparently unsatisfied, the same crew reappeared two days later, leaving with another $4,500 in unmentionables.

As the years progressed, so did the shoplifting with major thefts being investigated at stores like BestBuy, Ulta, Marshalls and more…Murfreesboro Police have worked to tackle the epidemic, teaming up with retailers to rearrange store layouts and tighten security measures... Their efforts paid off at some stores, which has made several store owners pleased as punch.

With Christmas fast approaching, local authorities are bracing for yet another influx of festive “shopping” sprees that don’t involve checkout lines.

So if you're a business owner in Murfreesboro, consider this your yearly reminder: the season of goodwill, joy, and perhaps more than a few shoplifting sprees is upon us. And if you need a hand stopping the “holiday heist squad,” don’t hesitate to call Murfreesboro Police. Just don’t wait until January. Local businesses can call Murfreesboro Police at 615-849-2673 to set-up a time to discuss what can be done at their location to combat the thefts.
