Federal Indictment Filed After $50K ATM Theft in Murfreesboro: Three Texas Men Charged

MURFREESBORO,  TN  - A federal grand jury has indicted three men from Houston, Texas, in connection with a daring ATM theft in Murfreesboro. Robert Bailey, Jr., 24, Demond Johnson, Jr., 19, and Ryan Smith, Jr., 26, were charged with one count of bank larceny, Acting U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski for the Middle District of Tennessee announced.

According to the indictment, the defendants stole over $50,000 from an ATM outside the Truist Bank on Old Fort Parkway on November 14, 2023, while the machine was being serviced. Smith was arrested soon after on Interstate 24 while riding in an Uber. Johnson was caught trying to flee the state at Nashville International Airport. Bailey managed to board a flight to Houston but was apprehended later. Law enforcement in Houston seized the stolen money, which was found in a bag that arrived at Houston Hobby Airport.

All three men face serious federal charges. If convicted, they each face up to 10 years in federal prison, along with a minimum fine of $250,000.

The investigation was led by the FBI's Nashville and Houston field offices, the Murfreesboro Police Department, and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy is prosecuting the case.
