John N. Sowell, age 84, a cherished member of the Murfreesboro and Christiana communities, passed away on September 21, 2024, just 11-days before his 85th birthday. Mr. Sowell died at his home in Rutherford County, surrounded by loved ones who were by his side. A devoted husband to Mattie Sowell for 65 years and father to sons Jeff and Jimi, John left behind a legacy rooted in family, faith, and service.

John Sowell was often found at Jeff’s Family Friendly Restaurant, a beloved spot on Hancock Street in Murfreesboro that he opened with his sons. For 18 years, the restaurant has been a family affair, with John and Mattie often spotted working alongside their sons, Jeff and Jimi, all serving the local community. Despite being officially retired from the federal government, John’s pride in his sons’ accomplishments kept him engaged on a regular basis.

Before stepping into the world of restaurants, John spent a long career with the United States Postal Service. Serving as an associate officer coordinator, he oversaw post offices throughout Tennessee and all the way to the Alabama state line. John retired from the Postal Service on October 2, 1992, almost exactly 32 years before his passing.

John’s passions extended far beyond his professional life. A talented musician, he played the electric tenor saxophone, performing everything from rock and roll classics to hits by legends like Jimi Hendrix. Later, his musical focus shifted to gospel hymns. He even joined the Mt. Gilead Mass Choir, taking his musical talents on the road as part of the church's performances.

Farming was another of John’s loves. In Christiana, he embraced the title of a hobby farmer, raising Charolais and Polled Hereford cattle, along with chickens and hogs. His farm was a reflection of his deep connection to nature and his joy in tending to his animals.

Above all, John Sowell was a devoted Christian, a fact his wife Mattie proudly shared. For 65 years, Mattie stood by his side, witnessing his many talents and passions. The couple’s love for their family was evident in everything they did, especially in their work at the family restaurant, which brought them great pride.

Services for John N. Sowell will be held this Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Scales & Sons Funeral Home in Murfreesboro, where his body will lie in state from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Graveside services will take place on Friday at 12:00 PM at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville.
