Challenges of Rapid Growth in Rutherford County Schools

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - The Rutherford County School system continues to grow, breaking student enrollment records year-after-year... That was Chief Communications Director James Evans, who started working for the county schools 21-years ago. The student population in 2003 was much smaller... At least 1-thousand new students are enrolled in the county schools annually.

Over the years, a lot has changed. From technology, to where students are from... That was Dr. Kay Martin, Deputy Director of the County Schools. Making it hard on a percentage of the new students, some of them have never been in a regular classroom setting before... Students as old as 15 and 16 are attending a traditional public school for the very first time... in Rutherford County. The primary languages spoken outside of English are Spanish and Arabic. And the number one thing that the students have in common...

The Rutherford County School District is the 4th largest in Tennessee and over 52-thousand students call the classrooms in Murfreesboro, Eagleville, Smyrna and LaVergne home.
