Democrat VP Choices are Many Says MTSU Political Science Professor

(MURFREESBORO) - All eyes are on Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsing her. One big question remains: who will Kamala Harris select as her running mate?

Kent Syler, a professor of political science at MTSU, was a Roundtable show guest of Chip Walters. He believes Harris’ campaign is close to narrowing down her selection.

Syler also advises that Harris choose someone with a different background than her own as Former President Donald Trump did with JD Vance to help balance his ticket.

Harris’ pick could heavily influence voters in certain swing states. Syler points to Governor Josh Shapiro as a highly likely candidate with his influence over Pennsylvania and the Rust Belt.

Andy Beshear and Roy Cooper, governors of Kentucky and North Carolina respectively, may have less influence than she might hope as both states lean Republican. Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota could help secure the states around the lakes for the Democratic Party including the Wisconsin and Michigan toss-ups. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan says she has not been vetted as a possible VP pick.

For more political analysis on the upcoming election, listen to Chip Walters’ discussion with Kent Syler on a recent episode of the Roundtable on our website WGNSRadio.com.
