MURFREESBORO, TN - Murfreesboro Police have released video footage (SEE ABOVE) from the early stages of their investigation into a double shooting that left one man dead and another injured this past Wednesday. Public Information Officer Larry Flowers informed WGNS that the incident occurred at a gas station on Joe B. Jackson Parkway at Elam Road, stemming from a dispute over car ownership.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Devon Loritts from Georgia, was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital. His brother, who was also shot, sustained injuries to his arm and was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Police have charged 26-year-old Juan Charco of Antioch with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Charco’s brother, who was allegedly involved in the incident, was interviewed by detectives and subsequently released. Authorities indicate that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Preliminary findings suggest that the incident began over a disputed ownership of a Chrysler 300 – four door sedan. Loritts had previously purchased the car from Charco, and it was tracked from Georgia to the 7 Eleven / Exxon on Joe B. Jackson Parkway at Elam Road in Murfreesboro. The shooting occurred at 2:39 p.m., after which the Charco brothers reportedly attacked Loritts’ brother, who managed to escape and seek help inside the store.
Upon arrival, Murfreesboro Police officers administered emergency medical aid to both victims, including applying a tourniquet to Loritts’ brother's arm to control the bleeding. Advanced emergency care was then provided by the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services.
The Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Division Violent Crime Unit continues to investigate the case. Juan Charco is currently being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $1.5 million bond. His court date is scheduled for July 17 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
