MTSU's SoKidLit Festival Promotes Literacy and Creativity in Community Children

Murfreesboro, TN - Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Education partnered with the Rutherford Arts Alliance to host the second annual Southern Kid Literary Festival, also known as “SoKidLit!” The event, held on the Blue Raider campus, aimed to promote reading among children in the community.
 
A total of 167 third through fifth graders attended the festival, participating in various literacy-related activities across classrooms in the College of Education Building. These included drawing sessions, interactive lessons, STEM experiments, and a presentation by local writer Kristin O’Donnell Tubb.
 
Katie Schrodt, associate professor of education and event organizer, highlighted the collaborative efforts of faculty volunteers from the College of Education, as well as graduate assistants and students who dedicated their time to ensure the success of the festival.
 
The festival provided a platform for participants to celebrate the importance of literacy and education while fostering collaborative relationships between families, schools, and community members focused on enhancing education and literacy.
 
Overall, the Southern Kid Literary Festival served as a collaborative effort to promote literacy and education within the community, providing children with a platform to explore their creativity and develop a love for reading and learning.
