(MURFREESBORO)  While MTSU's Peck Hall was closed Wednesday due to a suicide by a contracted worker, the facility re-opened on Thursday (11/2/2023). MTSU President Sidney McPhee said, "The university’s thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and coworkers of the victim."

Previous News Article: A death inside Peck Hall on the MTSU campus is what led to the building on campus being shut down and classes canceled Wednesday.

MTSU President Sidney McPhee said, "MTSU Police Chief Edwin Kaup and Larry Flowers, spokesman for Murfreesboro Police and Fire Rescue Departments, said officers responded this (Wednesday) morning, Nov. 1, to the discovery of an apparent fatality in Peck Hall. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and it was later determined that the victim took their own life. The victim was a contract worker and not a student or university staff member. The identity of the victim is pending notification of family.

Police determined the victim entered Peck around 3 a.m. and was alone in the building until discovered around 7:20 a.m. While there is no threat to the campus, Peck Hall will remain closed today (Wednesday) with classes canceled and offices closed. Activities will resume as scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 2. Per Tennessee law, Murfreesboro Police is the lead investigator on unattended deaths and will issue updates as deemed appropriate."

The incident has led to a police presence at Peck Hall on the university campus. It has also led the university to cancel classes in the building that has traditionally been used for both literature and psychology departments.
