SMYRNA, TN - The fountain of youth may be considered a myth, but some North Rutherford Family YMCA members over the age of 90 recently shared their secrets for living a long, healthy life at a birthday party held to celebrate them.

“The birthday party was a hit,” said Derek L. Blake, executive director of the North Rutherford Family YMCA. “The members really enjoyed the invite and the attention.  Special thanks to Denise and her team for making this a great and successful event.”

Five members of the North Rutherford Y attended the party: Joan Ennis, 92; Nannie Gordan, 96: Don Gordon, 97; Pauline Hall, 103, and Elmer Jackson, 95. Additionally, Don and Nannie celebrated 76 years of marriage this year, and Pauline will celebrate another birthday in October.

When asked what is the secret to a long life, Joan Ennis, 92, said she eats fish and chicken but rarely eats beef.

“Our generation lived a much simpler life. We were more physical and worked with our hands,” Ennis said. “All of our fruits and vegetables were homegrown.”
