MURFREESBORO, TN - The Criminal Investigation Division of the Murfreesboro Police Department investigates a long list of crimes, one of which is fraudulent returns, which equal fraudulent refunds. The most recent of which was reported on Tuesday at Walmart on Old Fort Parkway. In this case, the customer returned an item that was allegedly shoplifted, obtaining the refund for something they never paid for.

Detectives obtained video footage of a subject they reported they'd like to speak to. Police have even released a photo of the so called “Person of Interest,” in hopes of someone recognizing him. According to the National Retail Federation, $166-million in merchandise is returned for every $1-billion worth of sales. Out of those numbers, about $10.40 is lost in fraudulent returns for every $100 in actual, bonafide merchandise returns.

Authorities say the man left the store in a 2012 Kia Sorento and ask that if you have information or knowledge of the theft or if you can identify the man in the photo released by the MPD, to contact Detective Ray Worden 629-201-5637 or email him at 0954@murfreesborotn.gov.

Overall, returns account for $816 billion in lost sales.
