(SMITHVILLE) An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the arrest of a Smithville man on a murder charge.
Reports indicate 56-year-old Thomas Dwayne Thomason was shot in the front lawn of his home early Saturday morning and transported by DeKalb County EMS to the local hospital in Smithville, TN, where he died. After the shooting, DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputies arrived on the scene and were able to take possession of the firearm used by the shooter. Deputies detained Jarrett L. Manning, who was also on the scene when law enforcement arrived. The TBI further determined 39-year-old Manning was the person believed to be responsible for Thomason’s death.
Manning lives on Ferrell Road, about 10-miles away from Thomason's home.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brian Williams said, "On July 22 at 2:12 a.m. central dispatch received a call of shots fired at Kings Court Circle in Smithville. A deputy arrived within three minutes and noticed a man laying outside on the ground with a gunshot wound. Also, there was the suspect (Jarrett L. Manning) who was detained at the time. EMS arrived and transported the victim to Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital where he succumbed to the wound.”
At the request of 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway, TBI agents joined the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the shooting at the residence in the 100 block of Kings Court Circle in Smithville. Also assisting with the case is an investigator with the DA’s office, along with Assistant DA Greg Strong.
After Manning was transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office early Saturday (7/22/2023) morning, the 39-year-old was booked into the jail on a charge of Second Degree Murder. His bond was set at $500,000.
Again, TBI agents determined Jarrett L. Manning was the person believed to be responsible for Thomason’s death. As of Monday Morning (07/24/23), Manning remains behind bars. The motive behind the shooting has not been released.
