Gas and Diesel Prices Move Up Slightly on Tuesday

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 3.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.16/g on Tuesday (05/30/2023), according to GasBuddy's survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 4.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 110.0 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has also fallen 4.9 cents in the last week and stands at $3.91 per gallon.

In Rutherford County, the price of fuel is lower than most areas of the state. The AAA Auto Club reported early Tuesday morning that the average price of regular unleaded fuel in the Murfreesboro / Smyrna / LaVergne area is sitting at $3.15 per gallon. Meanwhile, neighboring Williamson County has the highest price of regular unleaded gas at the pumps, averaging $3.44 per gallon. In Music City, the average price of regular unleaded is $3.27 per gallon. Wilson County is tied with Rutherford County at $3.15 per gallon, while Bedford County prices are 3-cents cheaper at $3.12 per gallon, according to AAA.

In the world of premium fuel, Tennessee saw a 2-penny drop in prices between last week and this week, with a current average price of $3.91 per gallon. AAA reports that mid-grade fuel is selling at an average price of $3.55 per gallon throughout the Volunteer State. Last week, mid-grade gas was priced at an average of $3.53 per gallon in TN. Prices today for regular, mid-grade and premium fuels are more than 1-dollar cheaper than prices 12-months ago, according to AAA.

For diesel vehicle owners, AAA reported on Tuesday morning the average price at the pump is ringing in at $3.65 per gallon. Current diesel prices are 4-cents cheaper than prices last week, when diesel was averaging $3.69 per gallon. One year prior, diesel was averaging $5.35 per gallon in Tennessee – that’s a difference of $1.70 per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.55/g today. GasBuddy reports the national average is down 3.2 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 105.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

"Gasoline prices have drifted higher in the last week due to some relatively minor refinery kinks and low gasoline supply, but it may not be a trend that lasts too much longer," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "As we unofficially start the summer driving season, the national average is likely to spend much of the summer in the range of $3.35-$3.85 per gallon, though it could go higher if unexpected refinery outages flare up, or we see a major hurricane or economic development. While gasoline prices have inched up slightly, we're still faring much better than we did last year, when the national average started to soar after Memorial Day on its way up to the $5 per gallon mark. In addition, gas prices may temporarily rally if there's a debt ceiling deal that passes through Congress in the weeks ahead, based on the optimism that such a deal could avert a major recession, keeping oil demand stronger this summer."
