ANTIOCH, TN - From our unusual or odd news files, we bring you another story that you don’t hear every day… This particular news story involves a stolen school bus and a driver who was not even old enough for a driver’s license – and it happened about 1-mile outside the Rutherford County limits and about 2-miles away from a local police department.

The accused 14-year-old boy was booked through the Juvenile Courts on multiple charges after the he allegedly stole a full-sized school bus from a school in the Antioch area on Murfreesboro Road. Apparently, the bus was parked at the Kipp College Prep School on Murfreesboro Pike last week when the heist occurred.

Ironically, the theft of the school bus happened about 2-miles away from the LaVergne Police Department, but the crime was just barely over the LaVergne city limits, placing it in the hands of Nashville Metro Police. After the 14-year-old allegedly stole the big yellow bus during the afternoon hours, the teen hit the gas and took the stolen ride on a recklessly drive into West Nashville, according to police. Metro reported the teen made it all the way to I-40 before being stopped and arrested.

Once in West Nashville the 14-year-old, who lives in state custody at an Antioch residence, was helpful enough to visit a local gas station. But once at Casey’s Market on Centennial Boulevard, he hit a diesel fuel pump. To make matters worse, he is alleged to have attempted to run over a person outside the market.

Police say the teen drove onto Briley Parkway, which is near Casey’s Market, and then onto I-40 west where he hit a car in the process of getting onto I-40. Metro Officers quickly pursued the bus down the interstate as it traveled at speeds of 60 to 65 mph. A spike strip was deployed near the McCrory Lane exit. With youthful teen eyesight on his side, the juvenile spotted the spike strip and slowed the bus. It was almost like a scene from a video game as the teenager stopped the bus and backed-up to turn around in the middle of the interstate.

As the multi-point reverse and forward option of turning around was taking place in the West Bound lanes traffic on the interstate, officers got out of their cars and ran up to the bus. Police broke out the glass on the school bus door and used a Taser on the young man as the teen was attempting to continue operating the bus. After being hit by the taser, police were able to take the 14-year-old into custody without further incident.

Now, the teenager is in juvenile detention on charges of vehicle theft, aggravated assault, evading arrest, reckless driving, driving without a license, leaving the scene of a crash, and failure to report a crash.
