The Tennessee General Assembly is heading into the final weeks of the first part of the 113th legislative session. JC Bowman, Executive Director of the Professional Educators of Tennessee joined WGNS to talk about two critical pieces of legislation that will be heard. Both pieces of legislation could have a positive impact on Rutherford County School Students and future MTSU students.

One of the subjects focused on academic standards in our schools. Bowman talked to State Representative Scott Cepicky…

Bowman also talked to Chairman Mark White about the Future Teacher Scholarship for future educators…

More Details: Academic Standards. HB 481/SB 599 deals with Academic Standards. It will require the standards recommendation committees to identify each academic standard it recommends to the state board of education for adoption on or after January 1, 2024, as foundational or advanced.

Tennessee Future Teacher scholarship. HB 432/ SB 1220 creates the Tennessee Future Teacher scholarship, a five-year pilot program to award Tennessee Future Teacher scholarships to students pursuing a teaching degree at an eligible postsecondary institution who meet certain requirements and who agree to teach in a targeted setting for at least four years after the student completes an approved educator preparation program like MTSU.

Bowman told WGNS there is a lot on the agenda this week. The Tennessee Future Scholarship began as an idea last summer on WGNS.
