(Murfreesboro, TN) – Detario Yancey, a senior Social Work major at Middle Tennessee State University, has released his first book, Daddy, Is it OK to Cry.” The book, a labor of love for Yancey, was written in a story format to provide guidance to parents on how to deal with emotions and sensitivities of male children.
Yancey, who currently serves as an intern in the Community Impact department with the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties, says writing the book provided a cathartic experience for him. “Growing up as an African American male, the expression of sensitivity and certain emotions is often considered a weakness,” Yancey commented. “It is my hope that through the story presented in my book, parents of male children are able to gain suggestions and advice on dealing with their children and realizing that it is indeed ‘OK’ and healthy to exhibit emotions.”
In addition to his internship with United Way, Yancey serves as Vice President of the National Association of Black Social Workers local chapter and a member of Phi Alpha Honor Society and was recently selected for a fellowship in Washington, D.C., which he is set to begin immediately upon his graduation from MTSU this May.

Yancey’s book is now available on Amazon and at daddyisitoktocry.weebly.com and has already generated positive buzz. “Detario’s story is a beautiful portrayal of how males are viewed by society and a great example of generational trauma. I definitely recommend this book to every family to teach children (and even adults) that it is ok to cry,” offered one reader.
A book signing for Yancey’s book will be held on Monday, February 28th, from 12noon-1pm, at the Academic Classroom Atrium at Middle Tennessee State University. For more information, visit the website at daddyisitoktocry.weebly.com.
