Press Release from the Virgil Gammon for Sheriff Campaign:
MURFREESBORO—Republican Virgil Gammon, among the most experienced and decorated members of Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in history, announced today that he is running for Sheriff of Rutherford County. A 38-year veteran of the department, Gammon started as Patrol Deputy and spent 22 years in upper management command positions, including Chief Deputy.
“I feel like my entire career has led up to this moment,” said Gammon. “I have a passion for law enforcement and for our community here in Rutherford County. As your sheriff I will work to keep our county safe, get drugs off our streets and out of our schools, and run an efficient and clean department.”
In addition to his 38 years with the Sheriff’s Office, Gammon served in the United States Army – active and reserved, and the Tennessee National Guard. Most of his time in the service was spent with Military Police. He is a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and has completed multiple specialized schools in various areas of law enforcement. He attended MTSU for four years and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of the State of New York.
Gammon was elected as Rutherford County Commissioner in 2018, representing District 14 in parts of Murfreesboro and unincorporated Rutherford County.

“I feel great, better than I’ve felt in years. Even though I had the experience to do the job of sheriff before, it has never been the right time for me personally until now,” Gammon said. “Now, the timing is perfect. And I am ready to be your sheriff.”
Virgil has been married to Gina for 21 years. Between the two of them they have six adult children, Brian Gammon (deceased), Jennifer Gammon, Daniel Gammon (Allison), Stacey Ryan (Hampton), Drew Gammon, James Pinson (Jessica) and William Pinson (April).
