After World War Two, Sarah McKelley King and her husband moved back to Smyrna and actually lived in the Sam Davis Home. That perhaps is where Sarah King’s passion to preserve history blossomed. After that, she helped to form Oaklands Association and was instrumental in saving that structure from the wrecking ball in 1959. After that, her attention turned to our Historic Rutherford County Courthouse. A group of citizens wanted to tear it down and build a parking lot for downtown merchants. She was Tennessee’s first person to reach the top leadership position in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sarah King served as President General of the DAR during the 1983 Bicentennial of the Treaty of Paris along with the anniversary of the end of the American Revolution.
